NLP - Words That Transform
Simply stated, Neuro Linguistic Programming, NLP, offers dramatic, quick and lasting changes in any area of your life. NLP can also be used to help people resolve painful memories, develop healthier patterns of thinking, or overcome unhelpful habits. Richard Bandler and John Grinder, the developers of NLP in the 1970’s, like to refer to this phenomenon as helping people in "running their brains" using more useful patterns or habits. Richard Bandler has stated that "NLP is an attitude and a methodology that leaves behind a trail of techniques." It is interesting to note that even today, new NLP techniques are constantly being introduced to make changes more eloquently, more quickly and more permanently.
What does this all mean?
The beginning premise of NLP is we all navigate through the world by relying our own "maps" which have been developing since our birth. Our maps may be accessed by as mostly visual, mostly auditory, or mostly kinesthetic (emotionally or physically, such as a gut reaction). One person may see the world as a friendly place where most people are kind and trustworthy, while someone else may experience the world as hostile and scary, where no one can be trusted. We keep adding to our maps as we make our way through life, changing beliefs and attitudes as we encounter new experiences, people and ideas. To change the way we think or behave, we must change our maps to a more useful way of viewing the world we live in, thus changing how we interact with it. Everyone's map is different, not only in terms of our attitudes and belief systems, but also in the way we like to access our maps - through visualizing, talking to ourselves, or through our feelings.
However your map is constructed, NLP practitioners believe we all do the best we can with the resources we have. NLP gives us a way to access hidden resources, break up unhealthy patterns, and see the world in a whole new way. It allows us to expand and enrich our maps, which will add more flexibility in how we respond to any given situation, allowing us to address specific problem areas in our lives. Among other things, NLP techniques can eliminate fears permanently and quickly, give us new communication skills, and reprogram our brains. This is all done through talking and using your imagination – the NLP practitioner will guide you, using techniques which will help you change how you presently react to whatever is troubling you. The practitioner will help you look at this situation in a new way, and you will then communicate this change to yourself simply by “talking to yourself” throughout the session. The end result will be a permanent change in how you view this problematic situation, and you will find that spontaneously you now have more choices of how to respond the next time you are confronted with the same situation – you will have more resources, a new outlook, and the ability to experience what used to be a troublesome problem with a fresh healthier outlook.
